Yup, I’m talking about Linkedin for your job search again

If you are a regular reader of this career advice blog , you know that I often write about how effective Linkedin is as a job hunting tool.  Recent posts include, Are you using Linkedin for all it’s worth and Linkedin Changes will help job seekers – Just yesterday, Linkedin announced another cool change that will help job seekers as well.  Have you noticed that you can follow other people on Linked in?  You now can not only follow other people but you can follow Companies as well.  As a job seeker you can easily be alerted when Companies you are following announce news, job opportunities and when employees are hired, promoted or leave.  As a job seeker, I would recommend that you takes these steps immediately:

  • Create a list of the top companies that you want to work for and start following them.
  • See if anyone in your network works for the company that you are following.
  • See if any of your connections connection work for that company.  If they do, ask your connection to introduce you to them.
  • Find out who the recruiters or HR people are for that company, chances are they will definitely have a profile on Linkedin.  Reach out to them and start a relationship.
  • Keep following and learning about your target companies, Keep reaching out and networking.  Don’t give up until you land a job with your target company.

As a corporate recruiter, I can tell your first hand that Linkedin works.  It is my number one source for recruiting talent hands down.  The cool part is that this new Linkedin feature will help companies and recruiters just as much as job seekers.  As recruiters, we are looking to build relationships with job seekers as well.  Especially those that really want to work for their company and go the extra mile to get their foot in the door.

Nice job Linkedin…Keep the positive changes coming.

Arthur- There are two ways to post jobs on Linkedin. One is to buy a job post from Linkedin for a couple of hundred dollars. The other way (and the way I do it) is to join some target groups and once you are a member you can add your job to the job discussion thread in the group forum.
