What is the #1 trait that companies are looking for in new hires?

If you are actively interviewing right now then this is something you will want to take very close attention to.  Do you know what the number one trait that companies are looking for and evaluating during the interview process?

Take some time to think about it…

Okay, what did you come up with – Loyalty? Perseverance? Drive? Tenacity? Leadership? Influence?
Those are all great guesses and very important traits to possess and demonstrate during your interviews, but the number one thing that companies are looking for right now is :

Breakthrough  Thinking

breakthrough thinking

breakthrough thinking

Breakthrough thinking is all about looking at things differently and coming up with new and innovative ways to move the business forward.  As a corporate recruiter I can tell you first hand that this is something we look for during our selection process.  One question I always ask candidates is to “tell me about something new that you have implemented?” or “Tell me about a time when you challenged the status quo?”

Creativity is the path forward and companies are looking for leaders that are not afraid to take calculated risks and do things differently.  This was recently confirmed by a survey of 1,500 CEO’s that took part in a study conducted by IBM’s Institute for Business Value.

So I ask : “Give me an example of a creative solution that you have recently implemented?”

You definitely want to be prepared to answer these types of interview questions and position yourself as a candidate that will be able to lead in the new business world.

I’m new to recruiting but I’ve come to find employers don’t really know what they want… they say one thing and you bring it to them and the next thing you know, they want something else. :)

I am a contract recruiter in the long term care industry. It appears that many of my clients like to see longevity before anything else due to the stigma that this industry has an image of high turnover.

I agree the healthcare industry needs (craves) forward thikers. Unfortunately due to the volatility of the market today many leaders are not around long enough to discover the benefits of this forward thinking!

    Hello,
I am a contract recrutier and I for sure know this Breakthrough thinking makes lots of sense. I do put people in a very harsh filtering process and part of my process will uncover their creativity. That is when I distinguish between a rockstar and a normal candidate. With the modern tools everyone should use their creativity.
    Thanks for sharing this article.

Its depend up on the position and work environment of the company .

sometimes most creative people may not be appreciated since the company/position is not prepared for the same.

But we may agree that the creativity must be appreciated in good organisations.

How interesting, I wonder if employers really understand what’s involved in creating a Break Through Thinking culture. Employers remind me of shoppers, what can I get for free with no investment. It turns out that the old adage, nothing is ever really free, is true, or perhaps, nothing really worthwhile is free.

I believe that organizations want a lot, but with very little effort. We are in the worst economic downturn in this countries history, yet more people quit their jobs than were laid off, February 2010. What does that tell employers?

  6. Thank you for that article as it is always very powerful for the candidate to know what some employers are looking for!

It can be very subjective depending on the nature of the business/employer. Some employers feel that methodology, adaptability, leadership, authenticity and timeliness” would be some of the top key traits as well.

Just be sure you understand that when you provide employers with your strong traits, for them to take you to task on them when you get hired!

    Best of luck!
