Right now jobs are hard to come by, and getting on in your career is going to be tricky for most people right? Well perhaps not; good companies are still looking for the best talent to promote to the top and right now promoting from within is more important than ever. All of which means that if you want to progress in your career, you can do so; it just takes a bit of hard work, tenacity and strategic thinking. There is plenty you can do to get ahead, but here are a few ideas to get you started.
They say that what you know is not so important as who you know, and you know what? It’s true. Certainly you might argue that the most qualified person for the job should get it, but the reality of the world is that that doesn’t always happen.
So whatever your job, start making the effort now to go to conferences, network online and get to know the big players in your industry. Don’t do it secretly either, if your boss knows you are going to a big conference he might well come with you or even pay for your ticket.
Most jobs are given via recommendation, and that goes for promotions to, so be the guy that everyone knows and don’t make a secret of your ambition.
Seek Some Training
Training can be expensive, but it is and will always be one of the best investments you can make, taking training does two important things:
- It makes you better at what you do
- Sends a message to your boss that you want to progress
You don’t have to go to college, there are probably industry specific courses you can take if you look around, and you might be able to find a mentor or a personal tutor who can help you learn part time.
New qualifications always look great on your CV and they will also give you confidence to go for opportunities as they come along.
Go Work For Free
There are plenty of people out there with great degrees but experience is somewhat harder to come by, and if you really want to offer employers the full package you need to show experience and transferable skills because quite simply, no-one wants to spend money training you.
Getting a position volunteering in a roll that is related to your career will give you that vital experience that you need but it will also serve to send out a clear message that you are prepared to do what it takes to succeed. Not many people will work for free, so the ones that will really stand out.
Ask For A Promotion
Seriously, this might be the best way to get on in your career because not many people ever think to do it. Think about it, what does your boss want out of any person he promotes? Sure he wants the best person for the job, and if you are not capable of a role you probably won’t get it.
But what he also wants is to pick the person that will try the hardest, he wants to give any promotions to someone who will pick up the baton and run with it.
By asking your boss for a promotion you are putting the idea in his head and also telling him that you are ambitious and ready for the challenge. Even if nothing comes up right away, making sure that you are the first person that springs to mind when an opening arises is a great idea.
